Day 28: Are we there yet? What time is it? How much longer

August 12

The kids have really been good, for as much time as they have spent with each other and the very little time they have spent apart. When they were little, we instilled the "Aunt Barbi" rule! They are never allowed to ask "Are we there yet?" But some how on this trip they have found ways around it, "how much longer, what time is it, where are we staying, what's our final destination?" They have both done a really great job of keeping themselves busy while we drive. Books, summer school work, Legos, American Girl, Polly Pockets, journal, cars, movies, devices.

We left our lovely Walmart parking lot by 8:20 a.m. this morning and headed for the Missouri border. Breakfast on the road, muffins for my three loves and I had my yummy Shakeology.

There was a small attraction along Historic Route 66 in Galena, Kansas that we thought was worth the 30 minute detour, AND the kids are able to add another state to their list.  Check this out: it's the original Mator that inspired the character Tow Mator in the movie Cars. There are 4 women who purchased all four corners of historic Route 66 in their town. It was run down and they have restored two of the corners. This spot in particular is an old gas station they have turned Into a shop & diner.  The whole little town was really charming.

Finally stopped outside of Vandilia, IN to eat dinner. Jason needed to a break from behind the wheel more than he thought he did. Stopping to eat is a little more of a challenge than just what you are hungry for. We have to make sure we can pull in and there is enough space for this big rig.  So we opted for our first family dinner at Cracker Barrel.  I have to say, we all enjoyed it. AND made some pretty healthy choices, well - couple of us. Charlie choose to have a baked sweet potato with his grilled cheese instead of fries. I also had a sweet potato with my chicken, plus some broccoli. Even though it's vacation, when you are gone for as long as we have been, you have to watch the food choices.

We are on the Indiana/Ohio border tonight, drove late and just couldn't do another 4 hours. 650 miles.

States: Oklahoma, Missouri, Kansas, Illinios, Indiana
Time zone: Central & Eastern
