We were so glad to have a rest day. A chance to play and explore after 3 long days of driving. Every time we drive across this beautiful country, I am still in awe over how the terrain changes so dramatically from state to state. Oklahoma & Northern Texas were flat as can be, full of open space and farms. In New Mexico, we saw mesas, buttes and plateaus. Excellent geology lesson sparked by Lily. She looked up everything and explained the difference to us. She will be a guest blogger about it later;) Then as we traveled through Northern Arizona, it's full of lush thick tall pine trees and mountains. In 2014, we drove up to
the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and wanted to see something new to us, so we headed South.
From Williams/Flagstaff area, we took the scenic route down the mountain on 89A. The landscape quickly changes as you head down the mountain.m and becomes red rock. We checked out the cute town of Sedona then headed up to the Airport Vista to view Thunder Mountain.

This vista is supposed to be just breathtaking at sunset. I can only image as this was just as beautiful.
We wanted to try Slide Rock State Patk and heard great things about it from friends and family who were just there last week. We got there before 10 a.m. but it was at least a 2 hour wait to get in because the parking lot was full. It's an old homestead that has a huge natural swimming whole. People were parking along this very narrow curvy road and walking a mile into the park, which seemed a little dangerous to us. So we opted to get started on a few jeep trails.
We had a nice lunch at Sound Bites in Sedona and listened to a live band, and headed back out to another tail that locals recommended.

My new Rubicon Hard Rock doesn't have a lift on it yet or my old "35 tires. The trail would have a been a bit smoother if so. There were a few moments of nervousness but it was fun doing what the jeep was meant to do. Not to mention getting off road and even closer to all this natural beauty.
A storm was rolling in to the North and looked pretty cool. Oh and it was 107 degrees in this area of the dessert!! Yikes, but when there isn't 80% humidity like at home, it was much more tolerable. . As we headed back to Williams, 2 giant bull elk ran across the interstate. They were already over on the median headed to the other lanes, thankfully. In
Yellowstone we saw a ton of elk, but they were all females and babies. By the time we were back at the campground, the temperature dropped 35 degrees to 72! Crazy. Swimming in the resort pool as promised to two little Wahls, then had a easy dinner. I used the left over meatballs from the night before for sub sandwiches for the fam, and a salad for mama. Showers and off to bed by 9:30. We haven't adjusted to the time change yet.
It as a another awesome day for this Wahl family. Grateful to see our beautiful country and all it's natural wonders.
