2016: Memorial Day weekend part 2

For years, I have been keeping a magazine article about Kentucky Horse Country. I was a horse lover at a young age and have always wanted to go.  Then Lily found a love for horses at age 4.  We knew visiting the area after Mammoth Cave would be a perfect match.  That article was from May 2008....can't believe I still had it.   We decided to go to Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby Museum is right on the property.
We went to the museum first.  Admission includes the museum, "The Greatest Race" movie, a historic walking tour, and a seeing a few of the horses up close.   I love that the museum tells about the Derby from the horse's life, jockey, owner, and trainer's view. We learned that  the winner's blacket is made with more than 400 roses, each kept fresh by a tiny water vial sewn into the lining.   I just LOVED the "The Greatest Race" movie. It's shown on a giant 360-degree screen, which opens with the sun rising on a Kentucky Farm, Clairborne with a foal being born. Again, it tells a story from all perspectives and all about race day from start to finish.
Lily just loved all the hats!  The one in the bottom right was her favorite and it had pheasant feathers in it.  So easy for us to make!  The tour was pretty cool, they already had Nyquest Jockey repainted from the Derby 2 weeks before.
Charlie makes a pretty cute jockey doesn't he?

After a few hours at the museum, and we headed over the race track.  Kids were free and adults were only $3 for general admission. Sure does beat prices on actual derby day!  We sat in a nice shady box seat, got lunch, and learned about betting 101.  After a few races, Jason placed a $5 bet  to win with Lily's choice.  It was down to the last 2 seconds and our horse finished 2nd.  Darn...could have won a whole $9!

Thankful for another fun adventure and family time together.  Back to camp for dinner, swimming and a movie.  Home on Monday.

In total, we traveled 896 miles throughout Ohio and Kentucky, saw 2 National Parks and a major tourist attraction. Don't be shy, leave us your comments as you follow us this summer!
